Maine & Georges Bank: Your Maritime Adventures Await

Embark on a journey through the state of Maine and travel through Georges Bank, where the rich marine heritage and abundant crustacean populations offer an unparalleled adventure. While we tend to focus on all things crustacean here at Crustacean Club, Georges Bank is famously known as an important fishing ground teeming with life such as cod, haddock, herring, flounder, as well as lobster, scallops, and clam. What makes Georges Bank so plentiful is its relatively shallow sea floor. Thus, this shallow plateau makes for a smorgasburg of fishing delights!

From lobstering in Maine’s coastal waters to exploring the deep fishing grounds of Georges Bank, this region promises an unforgettable experience for seafood enthusiasts and maritime explorers alike.

Lobstering in Maine

Maine’s coastline is renowned for its robust lobster population, each one a testament to the bounty of the Atlantic. Lobstering in Maine is an age-old tradition that has been a part of Main’s culture since the 1800’s. The clear, cold waters are ideal for catching these prized crustaceans.

Specifically, the area around Penobscot Bay is home to the richest lobster bottom on the entire east coast. You can join a lobster tour or rent your own equipment; just keep in mind, you’ll need to ensure your harvesting license is up to date with the regulations of the Maine Department of Marine Resources if you’re going to venture out on your own. For first time visitors with limited time, we recommend lobster boat tours. They are family-friendly and they ensure you’ll not only get a first-hand lobstering experience, but also see various landmarks and other ocean life, such as porpoises, seals, and whales.

Crabbing in Maine

Crabbing in Maine offers a delightful and rewarding experience. The state’s estuaries and coastal waters are home to a variety of crab species, including the blue crab and the Atlantic rock crab. Tidal pools and marshes are exceptionally good spots to scout your catch, but Maine crabbing is only allowed by hand or with hook and line. Traps of any design are illegal. In Maine, all are welcome to join in the centuries long tradition of crabbing along the picturesque coastline as long as local guidelines and rules are followed.
